Alumni of Winston-Salem State University want to gather 50,000 signatures asking legislators to help save the bachelor's degree program in nursing at the school.

The petitions also will be sent to members of the University of North Carolina board of governors and to C.D. Spangler, the president of the UNC system.The alumni's efforts are a response to a proposal by Spangler that Winston-Salem State's nursing program admit only students who already are registered nurses.
