North Carolina Baptist leaders moved closer Tuesday to slashing up to $4 million in funding from the fundamentalists who control the Southern Baptist Convention.
The new budget plan, born in anger over the fundamentalist direction of the nation's largest Protestant denomination, could cut almost in half the $9 million that North Carolina Baptists send to Southern Baptist headquarters in Nashville, Tenn.``What we're saying with this budget is that the leadership in Nashville is not representative of Mr. Average Baptist,' said the Rev. Gene Watterson, a pastor from Shelby who is president of the N.C. Baptist State Convention.
The convention's General Board endorsed the plan during its regular meeting Tuesday in Southport. The vote was 62-24.
