The Friendly Center Belk store won't be home for the holidays.
The department store will temporarily move into the old Kmart building at 3315 Battleground Ave. while construction is completed on a new, larger store being built at Friendly Center. The old Friendly store will close next Sunday.
The temporary Battleground store is scheduled to open Nov. 15, said Pete Huffstetler, Belk's executive vice president for the Triad.
The new 100,000-square-foot Friendly store will be twice the size of the original.
It is scheduled to open in May, but construction is ahead of schedule and the store may open sooner, Huffstetler said.
Construction on the new Friendly store has interfered with parking and access to the current Belk, prompting the temporary move, he said.
In the meantime, the temporary Battleground store will be about 25 percent larger than the old Friendly store.
Holiday shoppers can look forward to expanded men's and women's clothing departments as well as a ``Home Store' featuring housewares and bedding.
The company will try to make the temporary store look as close as possible to a regular Belk store. Hours will be the same, including extended hours for the holidays.
