Grimsley appointed Pat Neal its interim head football coach, the school announced Monday night in a news release.
Whirlies athletics director Lewis Newman said Neal has been on staff at the school as a teacher and an assistant coach for the past eight years.
Neal served as the defensive coordinator for the Whirlies, and he also spent eight years as an assistant coach at Smith.
"We are delighted to have Coach Neal lead our team this season and wish him the best," Newman said. "(Neal) has always served our student athletes well, and we are excited that he has the opportunity to continue coaching our Whirlie football team."
Neal replaces Damon Coiro, who left the school last week to take an assistant coaching position at his alma mater in Toms River, N.J., Newman said.
