When a strange noise woke Bertha Brownell in the middle of the night, she thought a cat had gotten into her house in Fayetteville. She called her husband, Francis, to investigate.

What he found was a 10- to 15-foot boa constrictor.``I didn't measure it, but it was a big snake,' he said Saturday afternoon.

Francis Brownell said he was able to tease the snake out from under the bed while his wife called the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department and went to get a duffel bag.

Deputy James C. Black arrived and found the snake had been captured. The snake was given to another deputy, J.C. Cook, to hold until the owner could be found.
