HOUSTON - Trying to revive her faltering campaign for Texas governor, Ann Richards said Monday that she had not taken illegal drugs anytime in the past decade. But she refused to say anything about her earlier life when, by her own admission, she was a heavy drinker.

At a news conference Monday, Richards, who is seeking the Democratic nomination, also attacked her rivals for making an issue of her personal life.

In a televised debate on Feb. 7, all three Democratic candidates were asked if they had ever used illegal drugs. While her two rivals answered that they had not, Richards responded, ``my addiction was alcohol.'

Her refusal to address the question directly has dogged her campaign since.
