Asheboro businessman W. David Stedman was awarded the Citation for Distinguished Citizenship by the North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry at the group's annual meeting Wednesday.

Stedman, 69, for many years headed Stedman Corp., an apparel company founded by his father. Sara Lee Corp. acquired the company in 1988. Since then, he has been chairman of W. David Stedman Associates in Asheboro.Stedman, a graduate of Duke University with a master of business administration degree from Harvard University, has actively supported programs to promote the U.S. Constitution. He also holds a master's degree from Georgetown University in astronomy and has written several articles for scholarly journals.

Last December he was appointed to the Task Force on Excellence in Secondary Education, a group selected by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction to find ways students can improve SAT scores.

Duke University President Keith H. Brodie called Stedman a ``true American' who proves the power of the individual.

``If each person did as much for this country as David Stedman has done, we wouldn't be bequeathing such a large federal deficit to future generations,' Brodie said.
