COMPUTER MAGNATE WANG, 70, DIES

An Wang, the slight, Chinese-born engineer whose development of a major computer firm was a classic American success story, died Saturday at age 70 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a long fight against cancer.

Hospital spokesman Martin Bander said Wang died at 5:31 a.m.``He was operated on originally on July 14 of last year for esophageal cancer, a very difficult form of cancer,' Bander said. ``He was admitted to the Mass General cancer center on March 6 after suffering some setback.'

He began Wang Laboratories in 1951 above an electrical fixtures store in Boston with a work force of one: himself.
