Carolina Power & Light Co. has disciplined two senior technicians at the Brunswick nuclear plant, who initially lied about a mistake that shut down a nuclear reactor last week.
In the course of performing routine tests, the technicians triggered the process for shutting down one of the power plant's two nuclear reactors during the night of Aug. 19, then falsified reports about the incident, CP&L spokeswoman Elizabeth Bean said.Later that night, as a CP&L team began to investigate what caused the shutdown, the technicians confessed, she said. No radiation leaked from the plant, she said.
The reactor should be operating sometime this week, Bean said.
The technicians were placed on administrative leave until Monday, when they were disciplined, Bean said. She would not identify them or say how they were punished.
