Greg Maddux, staked to a 7-0 lead before he threw his first pitch, allowed only six hits over eight innings and drove in two runs as the Chicago Cubs beat New York 9-2 in New York, preventing the Mets from sweeping a four-game series.

Maddux (8-7) struck out seven and walked one before giving way to Jim Bullinger in the ninth. He also hit RBI doubles in the first and third innings.Chicago sent 11 batters to the plate in the first against Anthony Young (2-7), getting six hits and using two errors, a walk and a wild pitch to score seven times.

Rick Wilkins highlighted the opening inning with a three-run homer, his first of the season, and added an RBI double for a career-best four RBI day.
