EMPLOYMENT IS VITAL TO BLIND PEOPLE

Since 1933, Industries of the Blind Inc. has worked to enhance employment opportunities for people who are blind. The key to our success is a little known federal program called the Javits-Wagner-O'Day (JWOD) program. For 60 years, this program has provided opportunities for people who are blind or severely disabled to hold challenging jobs, to lead more productive and meaningful lives, to gain work and training experience, to support their families and to become taxpaying citizens. This is accomplished while providing the federal government with quality products and services.

At Industries of the Blind in Greensboro, blind employees sew military apparel and protective equipment for the armed forces, manufacture household goods such as mops and brooms for military resale, and assemble and package ballpoint pens for government agencies. At our distribution center near the airport, blind employees provide services to the military by storing, packaging and shipping lighting supplies to government installations.More than 26,700 people in the United States who are blind or severely disabled are employed through this program. Employment is good for the country, good for our community and good for the employees of Industries of the Blind who benefit from the stability and independence of having a job.\ Derek M.
