She's wowed America for months with her electric stage presence and soulful voice, a longtime favorite to capture one of pop culture's coveted titles.
Mission accomplished.Fantasia Barrino's fairy-tale voyage from High Point to Hollywood reached its fantastic end Wednesday when nationwide audiences crowned her Fox's newest "American Idol."
Voters chose Barrino over Diana DeGarmo, a 16-year-old judges once deemed "too young" for Idol status.
"I always said I've been through some things, but I have worked hard to get where I'm at," Barrino, 19, said after learning she won. "Thanks you all so much, man."
Viewers cast their votes across four hours after Tuesday night's final performances.
The show's judges lauded both women but endorsed Barrino to win.
"You choose whatever you think shows your vocal best," Barrino said earlier. "I just get out there every week and pray that my songs send out a message, so that other people can feel what I'm going through."
