The Food and Drug Administration told six food companies Thursday to remove cholesterol-lowering health claims from the labels of certain bran products.

The claims are illegal because they are not backed by scientific evidence, the agency said.The letters went to Ralston Purina Co. of St. Louis for Oat Chex cereal; Continental Banking Co. of St. Louis for Oatmeal Goodness Bread Wheat Oatmeal; J & J Snack Foods Corp. of Vernon, Calif., for Toasted Oat Bran Shake; Pacific Rice Products of Woodland, Calif., for Vita Fiber Rice Bran; Health Valley Foods of Irwindale, Calif., for Oat Bran Fruit Jumbo Cookies; and Select Origins Inc. of Yaphank, N.Y., for Rice Bran Oil.
