FRANCE UNVEILS FARM AID

A special agriculture assistance program was unveiled Wednesday after the latest demonstration by farmers protesting low-priced meat imports and other issues.

The centerpiece of the package is a $270 million fund to assist farmers in debt because of foreign competition or the prolonged drought in France.Earlier Wednesday, riot police used tear gas to drive back about 500 sheep farmers throwing eggs, tomatoes and bottles outside a fairgrounds where Premier Michel Rocard was to speak.
