One person was killed and two others were injured Tuesday morning when the driver of a sport utility vehicle pulled out in front of a large truck traveling west on U.S. 64.
James Leach Ferrell, 69, of Asheboro, was killed at about 7:30 a.m. when he pulled his Isuzu Trooper out of Back Creek Road onto U.S. 64 and collided with a truck carrying pine straw, highway patrol officials said. Ferrell was reportedly taking his two grandchildren - Dale Hill, 15, and Danny Hill, 14 - to school.Dale Hill is listed in critical condition at High Point Hospital. Danny Hill was still being cared for in the emergency department at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon, and his condition was not available.
Dale Hill attends Southwestern Randolph High School, school officials said. Dale Hill attends Southwestern Randolph Middle School.
The driver of the truck, Jonathan Foster, 27, of Vale, was not seriously injured, state trooper D.A. Burr said. Foster's truck received about $10,000 worth of damages.

Traffic was slowed for about 40 minutes when officials closed a stretch of U.S. 64 west to let emergency personnel work. A tarpaulin was placed over Ferrell's Isuzu to shield the victims from passersby.
Burr said Ferrell might have been looking into the sun when he pulled out in front of the truck.
``When the sun goes up, it is a bad blind spot,' Burr said.
No tickets were issued at the crash scene, Burr said. Foster was reportedly driving the speed limit when his truck collided with Ferrell's vehicle.
After the accident, Danny Hill was taken to Randolph Hospital and airlifted to Baptist Medical Center. At 1 p.m., Dale Hill was in surgery at High Point Hospital. After his surgery, hospital officials expected to move Dale Hill to an intensive care unit.
Officials from Randolph County EMS, the highway patrol and the Westside Fire department responded to the accident.
