Guilford College scored early and often while cruising to a 97-78 victory over Marymount University on Saturday.

The win was the Quakers' second consecutive and raised their record to 6-8.Guilford opened up early leads of 12-2 at the 15:36 mark and 24-8 with 10:45 left after a Tyra Parson dunk. Even with the big lead, Guilford kept up its defensive intensity. The pressure caused Marymount to commit 16 first half turnovers and allowed the Quakers to run its way to a 52-32 halftime lead.

``I was pleased with our effort defensively,' said Quaker coach Jack Jensen ``We are finding out that our defense sets up our offense.'

The two teams played evenly in the second half with Guilford continually getting the ball inside for easy baskets or scoring off the break.

Parson, who finished with a game-high 24 points, was the Quakers' primary threat in the second half. Playing in only his fourth game, Parson tallied 14 points during the second half en route to a 12 of 14 shooting performance.

The Quakers shot 57 percent from the field and a season-high 94 percent from the foul line. In addition to Parson's 24 points, Guilford received 13 points and seven assists from Tim Beckwith and 12 points from Michael Wright. David Wall and Davis Lyons rounded out five Quakers in double figures.

Marymount, now 3-11, was led by Clay Auch with 17 points.
