A prominent Colombian senator closely allied with leading presidential candidate Cesar Gaviria was gunned down Monday in the cocaine center of Medellin, authorities said. Also Monday, 130 pounds of dynamite - with the fuse already lit - was defused at a children's school in Bogota where two of President Virgilio Barco's granddaughters are pupils.
The two incidents, coming within days of Sunday's national elections, appeared part of the continuing bloody drug cartel campaign of violence that has included the recent killing of two presidential candidates and 25 police officers.
