Quiz Bowl 1990, sponsored by the Rockingham County Public Library, will be held Saturday in the Technical Laboratories Building on the Rockingham Community College campus.
All five high schools in the county will have teams participating in the 10th annual event. During the Quiz Bowl, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., teams will be asked questions on specific subjects, such as current events, history, science, literature and the arts.The Quiz Bowl competition was started and sponsored by public libraries in North Carolina in an effort to recognize and encourage academically-oriented students in the schools. The winner of the local contest will compete in a district and a state Quiz Bowl competition, which will be televised in May on public television station WUNC.
Reidsville High School is the defending champion in the Rockingham County Quiz Bowl 1990 contest.
Trophies and high score awards, given to the highest individual scorer on each team, will be provided by the Reidsville Friends of the Library. The Women's League of Eden will provide 10th year anniversary gifts, and the Eden Junior Service League will give logistical help during the contest, which is open to the public.
The teams members and coaches participating include:
Stoneville High School: Betsy Wray, Julie Joyce, Amy Crews, Brian Cable and James Kevin Joyce. Rachel Williamson will be coach.
Madison-Mayodan High School: Avneet Sood, Heather Lowery, Susan Pegram, Justin Conkle and Amanda Martin. Teresa Miller will serve as coach.
Reidsville High School: Brent Allison, Kirk Bryson, Martha Jo Carroll, Todd Crowder, Chris Daniels, Chris Phillips, Jason Robertson and Robert Shields. Coaches will be Marguerite Holt and John Knox.
Morehead High School: Amy Ragan, Tim Harrenstein, Philip Berger, Kevin Taylor, Heather Parsons, Marcelle Millner, Zann Jennings and Martin Garvin. Fern Ragan will serve as as coach.
Rockingham County High School: Jason Smith, Robert Smith, Phil Sharpe, David Murad, Kathy Allen, Sherrill Baker and Jan Larimore. Mary Hux and Martha Carter will be coaches.
Officials for this year are Allen Davidson, moderator; Bob Foeller, David Lane and Emily Parker, judges; Joyce Strope and Lynne Swaine, scorekeepers; and Sarah Pell, timekeeper. Jacky Miller and Laura Davidson are coordinators for Quiz Bowl.
Also during the event, 10-year veterans of the local contest will be recognized. They include volunteers Bob Foeller, Mary Hux and Teresa Miller.
