Tailback Vaughn Hebron had touchdown runs of 32 and 50 yards to lead Virginia Tech to a 21-7 victory over Bowling Green Saturday night.
Hebron, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound sophomore, had 165 yards rushing on 26 carries. The Hokies (1-1) had only 71 total yards rushing in their opening loss to Maryland.Virginia Tech allowed Bowling Green (1-1) past the Hokie 40-yard-line only twice in the game, a scoring drive late in the second quarter and the final possession when a sack by Roger Garland put the Falcons out of field goal range.
Virginia Tech made it 7-0 with 9:02 remaining in the second quarter after Hebron took the ball on a sweep and went 32 yards for a touchdown.
Four minutes later, Bowling Green faced third-and-18 deep in Virginia Tech territory. Quarterback Erik White found split end Mark Szlachcic wide open on the right sideline for a 31-yard touchdown pass.
The Hokies regained the lead on the next series when Hebron went up the middle, cut across the field and scored 3:33 before the half.
