Joel Harper, president of the Eden Chamber of Commerce, enjoys the variety of issues that come across his desk each day.``I help people needing information about population, telephone numbers in California or consumer problems,' he said. ``Sometimes it will be somebody wanting to locate a business here or move a family here.'
Harper has been providing such services in his capacity as president of the chamber since April 1990. Prior to that, he served as an administrative assistant for the city of Eden.
Harper is also responsible for the day-to-day operation of the chamber, which involves coordinating projects and economic development activities. He works closely with Don Schronce, Rockingham County Economic Development director, and representatives of the two other county chambers of commerce to promote economic development and attract new businesses and industries to the county.
``If we get a lead, we share it with Don,' said Harper, a Raleigh native who moved to Eden in 1988.
The Brigham Young University graduate would like to see the Eden chamber increase its effectiveness in the future.
``We need to be financially stable and to be an organization that can get things done,' Harper said. ``A lot of folks can generate good ideas, but they need somebody to get them done. I'd like to be able to be that organization.'
