LANDLORD UNFAIR TO ADDICTS

A federal jury Wednesday found an apartment management company guilty of housing discrimination because it refused to rent units to house recovering drug addicts.

The jury found that Southern Management Corp. had violated the Fair Housing Act by refusing to lease the apartments to a drug treatment program operated by Fairfax County, Va., and awarded $36,280 in damages.The department's civil rights division also has filed discrimination suits against communities for blocking group homes for mentally retarded persons.
