A Martinsville man was shot and killed outside his home during an apparent robbery about 3 a.m. Saturday.

Richard Ross, 48, of 301 Salem St., Martinsville, was pronounced dead at Martinsville Memorial Hospital after the shooting, said Investigator Mark Gilbert of the Martinsville Police Department.Police said Ross was outside his home when it appears a man approached, robbed him and then shot Ross in the upper portion of his neck. Ross' wife, Peggy, was inside the home at the time. Ross's 911 call came in at 3:04 a.m.

``She heard her husband outside yell 'Peggy, call 911,' ' Gilbert said. ``She knew something was terribly wrong.'

When Peggy Ross ran outside, she saw the shooter running toward her carport, Gilbert said. Police think that more than one person was involved because several other witnesses reported seeing a getaway car with the suspect running in front of it.

No arrest had been made by Monday afternoon.
