Dr. Edwin W. Monroe, a leader in the early development of health sciences programs and the School of Medicine at East Carolina University, will join the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust as executive director on Feb. 1.
The trust is one of North Carolina's largest philanthropical organizations devoted to improving health care. It was funded by RJR Nabisco stock until last year, when the shares were sold as part of the leveraged buyout of the company.Monroe will be responsible for administration, planning, community affairs and grants policy. W. Vance Frye, who has served as executive secretary, will continue working with the trust as associate director with responsibilities in grants management.
``Because of the growth in trust income generated by the buyout of RJR Nabisco, the decision was made to specialize staff responsibilities,' said E. Ray Cope, senior vice president and head of charitable funds management at Wachovia Bank and Trust Co., trustee of the Reynolds Charitable Trust.
Monroe is currently executive dean, director of continuing medical education and professor of internal medicine at the ECU School of Medicine.
