MADISON — Sinkholes are rare in North Carolina. The bedrock is mostly granite.
But when they do occur, sinkholes threaten roads more than homes.
That’s what happened in Madison late Monday.
Motorists driving through the intersection of Ellisboro Road and Sardis Church Road got a rare glimpse of one.
Initial estimates put the sinkhole at about 4-feet wide and 7-feet deep, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.
