Employees at the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum will use this holiday season to carry on the educator’s legacy in more ways than one. Again this year, Brown’s home, Canary Cottage, will be traditionally decorated for Christmas Open House. A food drive to help stock the GTCC food bank will also be a part of this year’s celebration.
“The staff felt that the reason behind the food drive seems to echo the mission of Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown,” historic interpreter Marian Inabinett said.
Inabinett saw the college’s student body president on a local morning show and decided to help.
“He said that they didn’t want students to have to drop classes to go to work to buy food,” she said. “And that sounds like Dr. Brown.”
Museum staff is asking that program attendees bring in nonperishable food items to donate.
Members from the Greensboro chapter of Delta Sigma Theta will be on hand for crafts with the children. There will be performances by several choirs and a visit from Santa.
