How do I submit an obituary to the News & Record for publication?

You may place your obituary through a self-serve portal, and when you do, you also save.

Click here…and follow the instructions to place your obituary.

We can place the obituary for you, for a 15% service fee:  Simply email it to along with your name, address, phone number, and contact information for the funeral or cremation service that’s assisting. You may also fax short obituaries to us at 336-373-7043 or contact us at 336-373-7072 to make a walk-in appointment with our representative between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

How much do obituaries cost?

We publish death notices which includes the deceased’s name, age, date of death, and funeral or burial arrangements. Death notices can be placed using the self-serve portal (Click here) or we can place it for you. With each notice there is a service charge of $25.00.

The second type of notice is a paid obituary. Obituaries vary in both length and cost. They may also include a photo of the deceased. To publish an obituary in our paper, we charge a $165 - $175 setup fee (depending on the length of the obituary) and then $5.80 per line. All veterans receive free flag icons. Military branch service icons are also available upon request for an additional charge.

How can I pay for the obituary?

Prepayment is required for obituaries submitted by family members. We accept cash, checks , debit and credit cards as standard methods of payment. Payments by cash or check must be made in person Monday through Friday before 3:00 p.m. daily. We are able accept major debit or credit cards (Visa, Discover, and American Express) over the phone any day of the week.

How soon do I need to submit an obituary to get it published in the paper?

We must receive an obituary and successful prepayment no later than 3:30 p.m. the day before you want it to run in the paper. Please submit your family member’s obituary as early as possible to minimize the chance of error.

I’ve already submitted an obituary. Is it too late to make a correction?

We can take corrections up until 3:30 p.m. the day before publication. Because of our internal deadlines, we are not able to take corrections after that time. You can make a correction by sending the request to or contacting our representative at 336-373-7072.

I do not have access to email or a fax machine. Can I submit an obituary over the phone?

Because of the very sensitive and personal nature of obituaries, we must receive a written copy of what you want published in the paper. We are not able to take obituary submissions over the phone, but you may visit our office any day during the week between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and our representative will assist you further.
