Jail crowding and giving extra land to Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown for expansion are among the items to be discussed today by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners.
The commissioners will discuss recommendations made last month by the Guilford County Jail Advisory Group. The group strongly recommends that the county establish a pre-trial release program that will help identify non-violent offenders who can be released until their trial date without posing a safety risk to the community.More than 85 percent of county jail inmates are awaiting trial, and many remain in jail for long periods of time because they can't afford to post bail. Officials hope the program will alleviate severe crowding in the county jail in Greensboro.
The board also will consider transferring about five acres of land it owns along High Point Road to GTCC for future use. The land adjoins property already owned by the college.
The commissioners meet at 1:30 p.m. in the Old County Courthouse at 301 W. Market St. in Greensboro.
