A rooming house blaze killed a man and a woman as they struggled to save their nine sleeping children early Thursday, fire officials said. The children escaped.
The fire broke out about 12:30 a.m. and destroyed the two-story wooden house before firefighters could respond, said Deputy Fire Chief Ed Spann.Several of the children were treated for minor injuries, but the only fatalities were the two adults, said Spann.
Details of how the children escaped were not immediately available.
Identification of the victims was delayed until relatives could be notified.
The cause of the blaze was being investigated.
