Wayne Hoglen is keeping a baseball bat by the door.

He and some other residents of the Chantilly neighborhood began taking extra precautions Friday after Charlotte police warned the public about a possible serial rapist targeting the elderly.``We're just keeping the doors shut and locked day and night,' said Joyce Hoglen, 41, who grew up in the Chantilly neighborhood.

``I'm not looking for trouble, just being careful,' said Hoglen. ``I know the police have a lot of territory to cover, but I think they could ride through here a little more often than they do.'

Police think one man may be responsible for six sexual offenses against elderly women in east Charlotte-Mecklenburg neighborhoods. In each case, a man broke into the women's homes between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. He raped three women. He exposed himself to other victims.

All of the victims live alone.

The rapist was unarmed and nothing was taken from any of the homes. He did not strike any of his victims, police said.

The man is white, about 6 feet tall, 200 to 225 pounds and 30 to 35 years old. He is heavyset, clean-shaven and has brown hair, police said.
