PRINCE'S 'GRAFITTI BRIDGE' ALBUM PROVES TO BE A PURPLE PLEASURE

PRINCE: Grafitti Bridge (Paisley Park/Warner Bros., 27493). LP, cassette, CD. * * * *

The Purple One's latest effort is the soundtrack to his latest effort, the release of which keeps getting delayed. No need to worry, however, because no matter how the movie turns out, the ``Graffiti Bridge' album is a funky blockbuster. Though billed simply as a Prince album, ``Graffiti Bridge' also offers up some fine tracks sung by the Time, Mavis Staples and Tevin Campbell, on which Prince plays auteur, as well as his own powerful numbers, including ``Thieves in the Temple,' ``The Question of U' and ``Can't Stop This Feeling I Got.' Though perhaps not the mind-blowing masterpieces that ``1999' or ``Sign of the Times' were, ``Graffiti Bridge' remains a serious purple pleasure.

DURAN DURAN: Liberty (Capitol, 94292). LP, cassette, CD. * * *Sure, Duran Duran maybe never was as good as its millions of teenaged fans thought it was, but neither was the band as musically worthless as its silly, pretty-boy image might have led one to imagine. And now that they're no longer overexposed, it's much easier to recognize how appealing the group's danceable, sometimes soulful pop rock can be. Yes, there's some annoying pseudo funk to be found on ``Liberty,' but there are also excellent, mature tracks like ``Violence of Summer (Love's Taking Over)' and the very pretty ``Serious.'

ERIC BOGOSIAN: Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll (SBP, 94757). LP, cassette, CD. * * *

Somewhere between performance art and stand-up comedy. Eric Bogosian has staked out some unique turf. This recording of his most recent one-man show is a dark, savagely funny take on the title topics with ``Benefit,' a send-up of a supposedly cleaned-up rock star, a particular gem. An insightful comic and dramatic look at the high life and the low life. ABC: Absolutely (Mercury, 842967-2). LP, cassette, CD. .

If you remember ABC only as the British group that hit it big with ``The Look of Love,' then this compilation is a fine place to dig a little deeper into the band's songbook. While ABC's albums were generally shaky affairs, they were always good for a few memorable singles, and they're all collected here, including ``Poison Arrow,' ``Be Near Me,' ``All of My Love' and ``When Smokey Sings.'

JANE'S ADDICTION: Ritual de lo Habiitual (Warner Bros., 25993). LP, cassette, CD. * * * *

This great young Los Angeles band is coming up from the underground in a big way with their second album, a worthy successor to their ``Nothing's Shocking' debut. Perry Farrell remains a fascinating frontman, and Dave Navarro is an exciting guitarist. High points include ``Three Days,' ``Stop' and ``Been Caught Stealing.'
