FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA - The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office identified a man found shot to death Sept. 5 as Ricky Lee Southern, 54, of Reidsville. The sheriff’s office is not yet releasing the name of a woman who was wounded, but said she is 58 years old and from Fieldale.
Forest Christopher Fielder, 58, of Pittsylvania County was charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bond at the Franklin County Jail, according to a news release.
The news release outlined an investigation that appeared to span several localities, beginning with a midnight notification from Pittsylvania County’s emergency center to Franklin County that Pittsylvania deputies were answering a call to a shooting on Burton Lake Road in the western part of Pittsylvania County.
There they found the wounded woman, who was taken to the hospital with a life-threatening injury.
Dispatchers had been told the shooting occurred at Barbour Lane in Franklin County at the home of the female victim, the news release said.
Franklin County deputies went to a mobile home on Barbour Lane, in the Snow Creek area, and found Southern. He appeared to have been killed by a gunshot, the news release said.
Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor confirmed to the Register & Bee that the shootings happened in Franklin County.
"Our office assisted in locating the suspect in our county," Taylor wrote in an email Saturday afternoon.
An investigation led to Fielder, the news release said. He was charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm to commit a felony, and is being held without bond at the Franklin County Jail, the news release said.
