Only $5 for 5 months

REIDSVILLE — Two Reidsville businesses are working together to expand, and the Reidsville City Council is lending its support.

During its Sept. 13 meeting, the Reidsville City Council agreed to pay up to $13,000 to develop a 12-foot wide, 400-foot long gravel driveway connecting Merchant 1 Manufacturing, located at 1203 Freeway Dr., and BETA Fueling Systems, located at 1209 Freeway Dr.

With their business growing, BETA sought more space for their operations. Just next door, M1M was looking to lease out an unused building.

“We’re out of square footage, and basically, one of the most important things is that this will keep us in Rockingham County,” said William Coleman, BETA human resources manager. “… This is a good opportunity for us and for Rockingham County’s economic development and for keeping local business local.”

BETA’s expansion into the approximately 12,000 square foot building will increase the companies ability to assemble and paint refueling equipment for, primarily, the United States military. This will create about eight to 10 new full-time jobs in Reidsville.

“I’m in favor of this because it's going to help BETA systems,” M1M President C. B. Lawrence. “Right now, they’re doing contract work for the military, and I want to do anything I can do to help the military.”

M1M will also use part of the space to expand its spray booth operations.

BETA has been in Reidsville since 1972, manufacturing equipment for aviation with contracts with Delta, Southwest Airlines and other companies.

In 2016, the company increased workforce by 10 percent and increased their capacity for temporary workers. This expansion is expected to bring the total number of employees at this location to about 100.

M1M moved from Greensboro to Reidsville in May 2016. Since then, the company has added four new workers to its original 22.

According to City Manager Preston Mitchell, the county’s economic development department declined to financially support this project.
