“One of the biggest eye-opening pieces of the survey is the need for social-emotional learning,” said Alessandro Montanari, assistant director of district and regional support at the state Department of Public Instruction. “That is clearly evident in the responses. We see that clearly as well in all the questions that have to deal with bullying and physical conflict with students.”

“Go forward,” Melvin "Skip" Alston, chairman of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners, told district leaders during a news conference Wednesday. “Bring the plans. Get the architects. Get the general contractors. Get the bulldozers. Let’s start building our schools the way that they should be for our children.”

The school board on Tuesday also approved asking the commissioners for $10 million in capital outlay funds for next fiscal year to pay for HVAC upgrades, roof repairs and outdoor lighting among other things. The county gave the district $4 million in capital outlay funds for the current fiscal year.
