SMOKE DETECTOR WARNS APARTMENT DWELLERS OF FIRE

Residents of a Greensboro apartment building were awakened by an alarm early Saturday and found the place on fire, police said.

The smoke detector at 614 S. Mendenhall St. went off about 4:15 a.m., police said.All residents fled to safety unscathed, police said.

The amount of damage and the fire's origin have not been determined.
