Buoyed by success in Greensboro, smoking opponents in Charlotte are renewing their drive for tougher restrictions, including a requirement that restaurants have no-smoking sections.
Last fall, Greensboro voters approved such restrictions to give them the toughest law in the state.``That was more fuel for our fire,' said Virginia Popovich, regional director of the American Lung Association. ``I certainly think Charlotte can pass an ordinance, too.'
A task force named by Mayor Sue Myrick recommended against such a law in August 1988. But after being lobbied by the lung association, Myrick agreed to revive the issue.
