SOAP SCOOP HERE'S YOUR CHANCE TO SOUND OFF ABOUT YOUR LOVES AND HATES ON DAYTIME DRAMAS

SOAP SCOOP HERE'S YOUR CHANCE TO SOUND OFF ABOUT YOUR LOVES AND HATES ON DAYTIME DRAMAS

Only on soap operas does virtually everyone have an undiscovered twin, an unwanted baby, a star-crossed romance or a false arrest for murder. Only on a daytime drama can an eye patch be a totally effective disguise. Only here is everyone divorced three or four times, often from the same partner, with absolutely no sign of anyone paying alimony or child support.

Soaps are no place for the career-minded. They are full of physicians who don't practice, lawyers who never see the courtroom, executives who have mastered the one-hour work day and receptionists who spend a week on the job before marrying their bosses and wrecking their lives.Frankly, there is little time for anything other than family crises, domestic arguments, kidnappings, alien landings, date rapes and shattered dreams.

Once in a while, something good happens, such as a virtuous heroine getting together with an equally virtuous hero, but you can be sure that the tranquility won't last long because some vixen like Jill or Erica will come along and spoil the mix. It's always that way.

This is nothing new, of course. Daytime dramas, the term preferred by the networks, were around even before television became a vital link in the American conscience during the early 1950s.

Before ``Dallas,' before ``Dynasty,' before ``Twin Peaks,' even before Luke met Laura or Erica victimized the first of her many beaus on ``All My Children,' there were soaps. Long before ABC television coined the phrase, ``Love in the Afternoon,' housewives tuned their radios daily to ``Search for Tomorrow' and other melodramas rife with romances, affairs, divorces and the ensuing social baggage.

Notable soap opera alumni include movie stars Kathleen Turner (``The Doctors'), Meg Ryan (``As the World Turns') and Kevin Bacon (``Guiding Light'). Some well-known soap actors are even from close to home. Eileen Fulton, a veteran of ``As the World Turns,' is from Asheville and attended Greensboro College. Debbi Morgan, the new star of ``Generations,' hails from the little town of Dunn in Harnett County.

Today, of course, soaps have moved far beyond the subtle innuendo of days past. In fact, some critics would say that daytime stars now spend more time between the sheets than solving mysteries such as who's going to bag the biggest womanizer in Pine Valley or why James Stenbeck won't stay dead.

The viewing audience is bigger than ever, too. More than 20 million people watch them daily, according to - what else? - the Soap Opera Encyclopedia. An estimated 50 million viewers tune in at least once a week.

The top-rated show, according to the TV ratings - ``The Young and the Restless.' Ranking last thus far is ``Generations,' which is also the latest soap to hit the networks. ``That's typical for a new show,' says Richard Spencer, co-editor of Soap Opera Update, a biweekly magazine circulating nationwide out of Fort Lee, N.J.

If you are among those millions who watch the daytime dramas, here's a chance to share your views and votes. Simply fill in the following ballot and mail it to: Soaps Poll, Greensboro News & Record, P.O. Box 21889, Greensboro, N.C. 27420. Votes will be counted and the results published in an upcoming Sunday Entertainment section.
