The Highway Patrol was interested in recruiting Darin Williams, until they found out the aspiring trooper in Rowan County is only 9 years old.
Darin wrote a letter to the Highway Patrol in the spring as part of a class project. In the letter, he said he wants to be a state trooper when he grows up.After writing the letter, Darin received an application from the patrol.
Then Sgt. John Flynn appeared, presumably to follow up on the application. When he found out Darin was only 9, he took him out to the patrol car and talked with him about becoming a state trooper.
