Named for university President Nido Qubein and wife Mariana, the venue boasts a 4,500-seat arena, 2,500-seat conference center and 60-room hotel. “We don’t sit on our hands and rest,” Qubein said.
Gladys Robinson, a Bennett College graduate and state senator representing part of Guilford County, helped connect the school and the nonprofit.
The four-year gift will help the computer science department expand its gaming capabilities and also create a Zynga Scholars program to help students develop skills in gaming development.
“When it comes to teaching, I’m going to do what works for students,” said Northern High's Leah Carper, the Teacher of the Year. “Sometimes that means dressing up in silly costumes. I take cues from my students about what they need. My classroom isn’t just my classroom it’s theirs, too.”
Fredrick Sellars has worked since 2019 at Dudley, where he has led the school's career and technical education program.
The district has 58 vacant bus driver positions out of 510, plus another 49 drivers on leave. Superintendent Sharon Contreras said "this isn't a Guilford County problem, it's not just a North Carolina problem, it's a national problem."
Guilford schools already has a mask requirement in place, but as part of a new state law, school boards are now required to adopt policies on face coverings and vote on them at least once a month.
The annual multicultural festival that celebrates roots and heritage this year features about 35 performers, with a wide range of music genres from hip-hop and funk to Southern rock and tango.
Bennett President Suzanne Elise Walsh said that with this grant the Carters (otherwise known as Jay-Z and Beyoncé) wanted to support the creative arts while also reaching schools that are less known outside the HBCU community and more often overlooked by philanthropy initiatives. "I love having this opportunity to invest in those programs and those students," she said.
