National book Award finalists named
The National Book foundation has announced the list of 15 finalists for the 1991 National Book Awards which this year includes a poetry award after a seven year hiatus.

Frye Gaillard to sign books
Charlotte author Frye Gaillard will sign copies of his new book, Southern Voices (Down Home Press, $19.95) from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Atticus Books, Forum VI, Greensboro. The book is a collection of profiles of Southern figures ranging from Jimmy Carter to former basketball star David Thompson.Jill McCorkle to read at UNCG
Chapel Hill novelist Jill McCorkle will read from her works at 8 p.m. Thursday in the faculty center of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. McCorkle is the author of four novels, including Tending to Virginia and, most recently, Ferris Beach. She is at work on a collection of short stories titled Crash Diet.

Writers Group sponsors reading
The Writers Group is sponsoring a reading by three local authors in conjunction with the art exhibit, ``Figures: Expressions of Spirituality' at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art in the Greensboro Cultural Arts Center. Those reading will be: Nancy Gates, fiction; Marie Gilbert, poetry; and Sandra Redding, fiction.
