ZAMBIA PLEDGES ELECTIONS

President Kenneth Kaunda, surrendering to opposition demands, said Monday he would clear the way for multiparty elections after almost two decades of one-party rule.

Zambia is the latest of several African nations to move toward multiparty elections after popular demonstrations against authoritarian regimes founded mainly on Eastern European models.Kaunda told top ruling party officials he was recommending constitutional amendments that would allow other political parties to contest parliamentary and presidential elections next year.
