GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jalen Herring is officially joining the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) track team as an assistant coach, announced by head track coach Kaleigh Roach on Thursday.
"We are excited to welcome Jalen to our Spartan family! When first meeting Jalen, I instantly knew he would be the coach I needed to help develop and oversee our sprints program," stated Roach. "Jalen brings an unmatched level of enthusiasm and excitement in teaching student-athletes, as shown during his time coaching at both the high school and collegiate levels, and I'm fully confident in Jalen's ability to help carry out the vision for this program!"
A native of Willow Spring, North Carolina, Herring will primarily focus on coaching the sprinters as a member of the Spartans' staff. He got his start among the coaching ranks at South Carolina, where Herring served as a student assistant coach during the 2021-22 season. While on staff, Herring oversaw indoor All-American performances from Evan Miller (men's 200m) and the women's 4x400m along with an outdoor All-American finish from the women's 4x400m.

Herring returned to his hometown to coach sprints at Willow Spring High School in 2023 before serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Campbell during the 2023-24 season.
The Fighting Camels enjoyed a record-breaking season with Herring on staff. During the 2024 CAA Indoor Championships, Campbell sprinters set three CAA and meet records and placed on the podium 10 times in the 60m and 200m, sweeping the women's 60m and men's 200m. Both 4x400m quartets also medaled.
In the outdoor season, Campbell sprinters set six more meet records in both 4x100m races, both 200m finals, the men's 4x400m, and the women's 100m. Both 4x100m times and Jaidyn Ramsey's time of 11.26 in the women's 100m were also CAA records, as the Fighting Camels won team or individual gold in eight of the sprint events.
Sprinters Jamel and Jamel Miller went on to compete individually in the 400m and 100m races at the 2024 NCAA National Championships, while also earning second-team All-American status with Dominique Alexander and De'Shawn Ballard in the men's 4x400m.
Herring returned to the high school ranks in 2025, joining Middle Creek as the assistant track & field coach for the season.
Graduating with a degree in psychology and a minor in sport and entertainment management from South Carolina in 2022, Herring featured in sprints and jumps for the Gamecocks for three seasons before transitioning into his role as a student coach. A standout high school sprinter at Middle Creek, he won the North Carolina indoor state title in the 300m as a senior in 2018, earning USA Track & Field All-American recognition. He was the runner-up in the 400m.
Herring was also a two-time regional champion in the 400m in 2017 and 2018, earning a spot in the event at the 2018 New Balance Nationals meet where he placed third in the indoor race.
Outside of track & field, Herring has also worked as a special education teaching assistant and probation and parole officer.
